Types of Drilling Fluids

  • Water-Based Muds (WBM): Widely used in conventional drilling, WBMs are formulated with water, bentonite, polymers, and performance additives that control viscosity, fluid loss, and overall stability. They are cost-efficient, adaptable, and suitable for formations with low reactivity.
  • Oil-Based Muds (OBM): These systems use mineral or synthetic oils as the continuous phase, providing enhanced thermal stability and lubricity—critical for minimizing torque in extended-reach laterals. OBMs are the fluid of choice for deep wells and technically challenging environments such as Vaca Muerta, where unconventional drilling demands high mechanical resilience.

Processing and Recycling Mud throughout drilling

Throughout drilling, mud circulates from surface to bottomhole and returns carrying cuttings, hydrocarbons, fine solids, and other contaminants. Once at surface, it passes through solids-control equipment such as shale shakers, desanders, desilters, mud cleaners, decanting units, and centrifuges.

After solids removal, the fluid is conditioned, treated with additives, and returned to the active system. This continuous cycle maintains system integrity, reduces fluid losses, and ensures every component operates within its designed performance window. Maintaining an efficient closed-loop system is essential for maximizing drilling efficiency and extending fluid life.
